In the past 5 years, I've lived in 5 different apartments across 3 countries. So, while I'm no expert, I have picked up a few tricks along the way. Here are my top 5 moving tips and a few things I wish I knew before my first move.
It’s always more than you think.
No matter how much or how little you have - it’s always more than expected. Be prepared for the last-minute chaos boxes (we've all been there).
Prepare in advance - you won't regret it.
Start with the things you don't use everyday - this will feel so good mentally - just the fact that you've started makes it a little less overwhelming. Stock up on moving boxes, tape and a bold marker (trust me, labelling with a regular ballpoint pen is just not the same).
Declutter.
Moving is the perfect opportunity to get rid of things you don’t use anymore. If it 's been sitting in a box for the past year, it's maybe time to let it go. Forgot you even had this? That probably means that you don't need it.
Set aside essentials.
In the midst of the moving chaos, it might be hard to remember what's where. Set aside things you will need for the first night at your new place like a toothbrush, toothpaste, toilet paper, fresh clothes, and something for breakfast in the morning (coffee included!). You will thank yourself.
Make it fun - it's a fresh start.
Moving is exhausting but it can also be fun. A move is a fresh start - and change is often a good thing.
